Tierra Co.

If agroforestry farmers had a way to increase their short-term income and improve soil productivity, preservation of the Amazon rainforest would be promoted. Tierra Co. will buy organic waste from agroforestry farmers through local cooperatives and will collect organic waste from cities in the Amazon to transform it into biochar. Our product, tierra-char, will be sold in the US market through a buy 1 give 1 model, so that with every bag sold, we will give one back to the communities so that soils can be recovered and productivity increased.

Problem

Agroforestry in the Amazon region has the potential to help restore ecosystems, improve degraded soils, and diversify sources of income and food security for farmer communities. If agroforestry farmers had a sustainable way to increase their short-term income and the soil productivity, they wouldn’t need to keep slash and burning, and Amazon rainforest would be recovered.

Solution

Tierra Co. will buy organic waste from agroforestry farmers through local cooperatives and will collect organic waste from cities in the Amazon to transform it into biochar. Our product, tierra-char, will be sold in the US market through a buy 1 give 1 model, so with every bag sold, we will give one back to the communities so that soils can be recovered and productivity increased. In a long term, we also seek to help communities be credited from their carbon offset.

Innovation

This solution is unique because it empowers farmers and indigenous communities. It also gives back to the Amazon farmers and it promotes a long-term preservation of rainforests.

Impact

tierra, through tierra-char will increase farmers income (by buying their waste and improving their productivity), restore soils (biochar promotes nutrient and water retention), prevent deforestation (by reducing the need of farmers to slash and burn), promote carbon sequestration (through the production and use of biochar) all while helping waste management in the Amazon region.

Next Steps

We will connect with agroforestry cooperatives and the municipality of Saposoa and other towns in the Peruvian Amazon where agroforestry is important to present our proposal.
