UNLEASH Hack Kumasi focuses on innovations that create sustainable waste management in Kumasi which include waste collection, reduction, and recycling. Ghana faces a chronic waste menace with research suggesting that a typical city like Kumasi generates at least 1500 tons of waste each day. Only about 52% of this waste is collected to landfills with the remaining either improperly dumped or openly burnt. Furthermore, just about 2% of waste generated in Ghanaian cities is recycled. Poor waste management practices pose significant health and safety risks to urban populations such as pollution, disease transmission, and socioeconomic inequalities. Urgent action is imperative to mitigate the adverse effects of improper waste disposal, safeguard public health, preserve natural resources, and foster sustainable development in Kumasi.
The Hack is scheduled to take place on October 11 and 12.
