Climate change is escalating flood frequency and severity in Burundi, posing grave health risks. From September 2023 to April 2024, nearly 204,000 people were impacted, with over 19,000 homes and 209 classrooms destroyed. To counter these threats, it's crucial to mitigate both direct (injuries, fatalities) and indirect (waterborne diseases) health impacts. Enhancing early warning systems for timely flood alerts and educating communities about flood risks and responses are vital. Strengthening healthcare infrastructure ensures prompt medical action and disease prevention after floods. Also, increasing access to clean water and promoting hygiene are key to preventing waterborne disease outbreaks post-flood. This UNLEASH Hack is essential to adapting and implementing effective strategies to safeguard the health of Burundi's population amidst escalating climate threats.
The Hack is scheduled to take place on October 4 and 5.
