In Guatemala, women face challenges in the workforce. Only 18% of managers are women, and 67% of women work in the service industry, where they often encounter discrimination and limited advancement opportunities. A substantial portion of these working women are part of the informal sector which lacks legal protections, exposing them to new forms of slavery, (e.g., those working as home cleaning staff or "tortilleras"), lack of safeguards related to menstruation, and various forms of harassment. Sex workers face unique challenges as they lack legal protections. UNLEASH Hack Guatemala will seek to develop comprehensive measures to address systemic inequalities against women in the workforce and ensure an equitable and safe working environment for all women in Guatemala.
The Hack is scheduled to take place in Autumn 2024.
