Climate sustainability and smart agriculture in Burundi

UNLEASH Hack Burundi emphasized the importance of quality education, decent work, and climate action to tackle environmental challenges and develop sustainable solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 28 Talents who joined the program employed a design thinking approach, an innovation methodology that encourages creative problem-solving and iterative development.
The Hack kicked off with a morning assembly, where participants were welcomed and introduced to their teams. The day continued with teamwork sessions focused on problem framing and ideation, guided by 5 dedicated Facilitators. Participants brainstormed ideas and explored potential solutions to climate-related issues.
On the second day, teams delved deeper into their projects, refining their concepts and developing prototypes. The focus remained on climate adaptation, with participants exploring strategies to mitigate the impacts of floods and drought. Early warning systems and drought-resistant agricultural practices emerged as key themes, reflecting the urgent need for sustainable and resilient solutions.
Through a collaborative and iterative process, teams developed eight outstanding solutions, each demonstrating creativity and potential impact. Out of those eight, three solutions will receive further training and support to refine their ideas and enhance their solutions’ potential impact, ensuring that they are well-positioned to address the pressing climate challenges they seek to solve.
The program was honored to host esteemed guests from youth development and empowerment organizations such as PAEEJ, SNV, and the American Ministry. Their presence provided invaluable insights and inspiration to the participants.
UNLEASH Hack Burundi showcased the tremendous potential of young people in addressing climate challenges through technology and innovation. The program was a testament to the power of collaboration, creativity, and a commitment to a sustainable future.
