International Youth Day: the role of digitalization for the SDGs
The theme of this International Youth Day: “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development” highlights the crucial role of digital tools and technologies in helping young people to drive the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Youth at the Forefront of Impact
Technology and data contribute to 70% of the SDG targets[1]. Digital literacy is not just a skill — it’s a pathway to social change and a cornerstone of sustainable development. Today’s youth are digital natives, harnessing the power of technology to address global challenges, amplify their voices, and create innovative solutions. From online activism to tech-driven social enterprises, young people have the potential to become the next generation of leaders shaping the future.
Across the globe, young people are leading initiatives that address pressing challenges, from climate action to quality education. Through their fresh perspectives and their determination to create a better future for all, they are already shaping a more sustainable and equitable world.
UNLEASHers Making a Difference
At UNLEASH, we get inspired by the dedication and innovative thinking of our community of thousands of young changemakers who have become catalysts for action. Their projects are diverse, yet they share a common goal: support local communities and foster sustainable development.
Jarius Andrew Greaves joined the first Innovation Lab in Denmark in 2017. Now, he’s part of YONER Liberia, and addresses youth unemployment and education in the country. With programs that have equipped thousands with entrepreneurial and digital skills, YONER Liberia is creating opportunities for high school and college students, smallholder farmers, and agricultural entrepreneurs, with a special focus on enabling women to participate in their initiatives.
Alin Gramescu, from Romania, joined UNLEASH China in 2019 and founded Station Europe a year after. This NGO helps underserved communities by bridging educational gaps and supports them on navigating the digital world effectively, among many other initiatives.
After her experience at UNLEASH Rwanda last year, Phumzile Karlen Jere was set to address the digital divide by facilitating an Innovation Lab focusing on the gender disparities in the digital sphere in Malawi, thus mobilizing her community as part of her role as Vice President of Girl Up Elevate Malawi.
Digitalization in advancing the SDGs
Digitalization is key in accelerating the progress of the SDGs[1], yet digital literacy and access to technology are crucial for young people to participate fully in today’s world. Recognizing this, the UNLEASH Community around the world have spearheaded initiatives that equip youth with the digital skills they need to succeed. From digital literacy campaigns in Cameroon to blended online training programs in Tanzania, these efforts are equipping youth to leverage technology for personal and community development.
Youth have an imense potential to drive progress towards the SDGs, and the innovative solutions led by UNLEASHers around the world are a testament to what is possible when youth are given the tools and platforms to lead.
Happy International Youth Day 2024!
