BeNu Foods is a social enterprise working to fight malnutrition in Ethiopia, with affordable, healthy, delicious locally made biscuits fit for daily consumption. A single BeNu biscuit provides at least half of the daily calorie and protein intake required for a school aged child. BeNu is 100% local, made by Ethiopians for Ethiopians; leveraging local supply chains, producing local food, to feed local people at a price they can afford. Two out of five school aged children in Ethiopia suffer from malnutrition, BeNu partners with schools to provide high protein biscuits in the classroom. Collecting data on the impact of our product is part of the solution; improved attendance, better academic performance, fewer reports of illness are all directly associated with our biscuits. Our product was developed to give people what they want and what they need. The market for snacks, and biscuits in particular has a gap of 200,000 tons/annum in Ethiopia, but the healthy, highly nutritive options are simply not available and certainly unattainable for low-income consumers. Our solution is to provide the options people need at a price they can afford.
