Author: Zainab Tariq Ali, Communications Lead YGA UNLEASH Hackathon
The UNLEASH Climate Catalyst Hackathon brought together passionate youth from across Pakistan to develop actionable solutions for climate challenges. Over two days, 29 participants collaborated virtually, brainstormed ideas, and pitched innovative solutions.
Seven teams tackled crucial topics, including solar-powered pumps for clean water, deforestation policies, a plastic waste management app, a carbon footprint calculator, agricultural hydroponics, and a solar energy research startup. To inspire Talents on their journey, two Experts shared their insights: Liaquat Ali Sultan, a retired air force pilot turned entrepreneur, who discussed climate change and business, and Ms. Rida Ashraf, co-founder of Skillistan, who led a mentorship session on “Global Awareness on Climate Action and Education.”
The winning team, “Green Hackers,” presented an innovative solution to provide clean water using solar energy to power a pump that extracts groundwater, filters it, and delivers safe water to the community. Reflecting on the event, Maheen Aamir, the winning team’s member, shared, “I had an incredible experience at the Hack, where I learned so much and was able to grow, thanks to a supportive team that provided us with all the necessary resources and guidance, and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to collaborate and innovate.”
Looking ahead, the YGA Climate Forum will offer these participants opportunities to further develop their ideas with greater exposure to critical climate issues.
